North East Maryland, at the top of the Chesapeake, hosted the FLW College Fishing Northern Conference Invitational this weekend. The boys from West Virginia University took home the title and qualified for the 2014 Collegiate Fishing National Championships.
The team of Edward Rude III of Falling Waters, W. Va and Mathew Gibson of Morgantown, W. Va, won with thier two day eight bass limit totalling to 19 pounds 3 ounces. Earning their club $4,000
"I went out almost every weekend prior to the tournament," said Rude. "All I learned in practice was that I couldn't catch fish in the Chesapeake Bay."
Rude said that it wasn't until the tournament started that the pair began to figure out the intricacies of fishing on the Bay.
“On the first day we idled out about a quarter mile and started on the first dock on the right and just went down the bank junk fishing,” he said. “We started putting pieces of the puzzle together and caught a couple off docks and a couple on a crankbait.
