Despite popular vote, the UK's new research vessel will not be named "Boaty McBoatface." Back in March, the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) opened an online poll to name their new $300 million polar research vessel. The vessel, to be launched in 2019, will be the UK's largest and most advanced research ship yet. In regards to submissions, NERC advised: “We're looking for an inspirational name that exemplifies the work it will do... The ship could be named after a local historical figure, movement, or landmark - or a famous polar explorer or scientist." Hand has since apologized profusely for the suggestion, finding the public's response "utterly bizarre." The deadline for voting ended April 16 with "RRS Boaty McBoatface" winning the public poll at 124,109 votes. But despite winning, NERC was clear in the voting guidelines that they will ultimately be selecting the final name. Science Minister Jo Johnson has stated that the ship needs a more "suitable" name. Johnson went on to state that they were "looking for a name that would be in keeping with the mission." NERC commented that a final decision will be announced in due course.
