Every since hearing of the diabolical snake-like creatures lurking throughout Maryland waters, Zach Ditmars, Proptalk graphic designer, was dead set on catching one of these beasts. Since May, he has made half a dozen trips to the lower Potomac to areas such as Piscataway Creek, Mattawoman Creek and Mallows Bay. After many misadventures, including flipping his kayak, drowning his iphone and snapping two St. Croix fishing rods, Zach finally hooked his target species. After 5 hours kayak fishing on the water this past Labor Day, a 18.5" Northern Snakehead hit a topwater mouse in heavy weeds in Mallows Bay just before dusk. Zach snapped these photos to submit the DNR angler's log, took it home and made buffalo snake bites. After seeing one of these animals in the flesh, you realize it's not a monster, it's a just a fish...and it's delicious. He can't wait to catch another one.
If you haven't heard of Mallows Bay, we would definitely encourage a trip there. The park was built in 2010 and has plenty of parking, clean port-a-johns, a boat ramp and kayak launch area. There is tons of wildlife to observe and it is home to the "Ghost Fleet", the largest ship graveyard in the Northern hemisphere. Park admission is free.
