On Saturday June 17, the second annual  Bowleys Quarters Cardboard Race was held at Miami Beach State Park in Middle River, MD. This event could not have been possible without Joanne Hock and Mimi Rehbein, along with the Bowleys Quarters Improvement Association’s Just BQuz group. Last year, they found a program online called Water Wise through the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The free program aims to teach youngsters how to be safe in and around the water. In a water oriented community like Bowleys Quarters, Hock and Rehbein thought it would be a great way to educate children and families about water safety. But how to get people to attend? After reaching out to the Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) in 2016, they were introduced to Julie Brown, the NRP Boating Education Coordinator, who suggested hosting a cardboard boat race. The idea was brought to a committee of the Just BQuz Group in 2016 and the event began to take shape. Race one was for the kids (parents could help with building) and entailed a timed one hour build on-site. In race two, participants had to be 18 years of age or older and build their boats at home, following a set of guidelines. Despite some wind and choppy conditions, this year's event went off without a hitch! https://youtu.be/zXZytiCgK-k [gallery link="file" ids="20560,20561,20562,20563,20564,20565,20566,20567,20568,20569,20570,20571,20572,20573,20574,20575,20576,20577"]
