This month's cover shot was taken by Walter Dorsett, a 20-year-old photographer from North East, MD. His photo, "Sunset on the Bay," was taken at Red Point Beach in North East. We recently caught up with Walter to chat about his methods and how he got his start.
PropTalk: When did you first get into photography?
Walter: I started photographing landscapes with a film camera when I was eight years old; the camera was a Christmas gift from my grandparents. They got my first hundred photographs printed and put them into an album. They were so proud of me and their support helped me to continue to take pictures.
Do you have a favorite subject to shoot?
There's no way I can pick a favorite subject. I love to create and the possibilities are endless! However, I will say wildlife and landscapes are what I photograph the most on a daily basis.
We read about how your fans recently rallied together to buy you a new camera. How did that come about?
On New Year's Eve my camera of four years died and one of my lovely followers from North East, MD, created a GoFundMe page in an effort to replace my camera and some other much needed equipment. Within one week my fans (mostly local) helped donate and raise over $3300 and successfully replaced my camera!
Your following on Facebook is truly impressive (40,000 likes!) How does it feel to have such a fan base?
It's so amazing to see how many people have discovered me, most of them local to Maryland. It's really a combination of my photography and my skills with marketing on social media. Although I am incredibly thankful for the amount of comments I receive, it does take a large amount of my time reading and replying to them. But it feels incredible to have so many people recognize me for my work. Pretty much every time I'm out in public in Cecil County someone seems to know of me! I love that I help positively contribute to the community.
