In 2017, the Maryland Marine Trades Association received more than 75 applications for its six-week on-the-job training and pre-apprentice program. From these applications, it culled the pile down to 18 excellent candidates. At the Baltimore Boating Center Marina, intern Hayden Foy is making sure engines are working perfectly. Photo courtesy of MTAM Fourteen of the candidates attended an Orientation Boot Camp where they spent the day touring boatyards and being introduced to a sampling of careers in electrical, engine repair, vessel operations, and customer service. Following the orientation, MTAM matched the 18 candidates based on interest and their geographic location. Among the interns and their employers were John Bauerle at Watermark Baltimore, Matt Dawson at Pleasure Cove, Diaz Renato at Port Annapolis Marina, Ryan Forsyth at Burr Yachts, Hayden Foy at Baltimore Boating Center, Benjamin Gawitt at Annapolis Harbor, Daniel Gleim at Hinckley Yachts, Alexandra Green at Spring Cove, Blake Harden at Chesapeake Boat Club, Bobby Johnson at Kompletely Kustom Marine, Caleb Kaiss at Harbor East, Tiago Mendez at Casa Rio, Brandon Mellinger at Tidewater, Matt Neisser at Bay Shore Marine, John Nierwinski at Galahad, Williams Hunter at Baltimore Boating Center, and Bobby Williams at Pasadena Boat Works. As of July, four of these interns have been offered employment after their six-week training is completed. Here are a couple of examples of the success of the program: Robbie Williams of Severna Park was placed at Pasadena Boat Works and is loving it. He told us what he likes most is that every day he is doing something different. Whether he is rigging, installing engines, or prepping new boats, he is having a great summer and learning a lot of great skills. A third-year college student, Ryan Forsyth, loves working at Burr Yacht Sales. He is so impressed with the huge yachts that he gets to work on. Right now he is working on a brand new 45-foot Fleming. Fleming Yachts are built in Taiwan and arrive at Burr to be outfitted individually per the customer’s order. Ryan enjoys customizing new boats from cushions to engines. He said, “I grew up around boats and have seen many different types, but none like this! I love it!” To learn more, visit mtam.org.
