March 17 is the last day to submit a Letter of Interest for acquiring
Hooper Island Lighthosue in Dorchester County, MD. The lighthouse is currently "free to a good home," so to speak. Previously it had been under the care of the Chesapeake Chapter of the United States Lighthouse Society, but in February the chapter announced their decision to turn it over to the right stewards.
The press release stated that "the property may be available
at no cost to
eligible entities defined as federal agencies, state and local agencies, nonprofit organizations, educational agencies, or community development organizations for education, park, recreation, cultural, or historic preservation purposes."
Hooper Island Light was built in 1902 on the Eastern side of the Chesapeake Bay off Hooper Island. It is a Caisson-style structure with an iron dwelling/tower that sits 63 feet above mean high water.
But interested parties must act quickly for the deadline to submit a Letter of Interest is
