The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, MD, will be offering free admission on weekdays in February. If you’ve never been, this place is a must-see, even in the winter. The CBMM campus is situated on 18 waterfront acres, just minutes from historic downtown St. Michaels.
The museum offers interactive exhibits, demonstrations, boat rides on the Miles River, and the largest floating fleet of historic Chesapeake Bay watercraft in existence. The small boat collection includes crab skiffs, workboats, and log canoes. Central on the campus is the Hooper Strait Lighthouse, built in 1879 and moved to St. Michaels in 1966. “At Play on the Bay” is the museum’s largest permanent exhibit and explores the dramatic shift on the Bay over the last 100 years as a place of work to a place of play.
Stop by the small boat shed, featuring both working and recreational crafts, and then make your way to the Maryland Crab Meat Company Exhibition, a replica of a seafood packing company and once the largest on Smith Island. There is also a waterman’s shanty along the waterfront, an exhibit on oystering featuring the skipjack E. C. Collier, and even the original Tolchester Beach Bandstand, built in 1880 and later moved to CBMM after the resort town was closed in 1962. Through February, the special collection “A Broad Reach: 50 Years of Collecting” will remain on display, and through April, “Chesapeake Swan Song” will also be featured and focuses on the evolving relationship between people and the swans of the Chesapeake
There is so much to see and do at CBMM and the town of St. Michaels. February is a tough month to get through, waiting for spring and trying to cope with the cold. So instead of letting it drag on, take a day off, round up the family, and take advantage of free weekdays in February at CBMM. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and regular admission is $15 for adults, $6 for children ages six to 17.
