Back in the summer, Under Armour founder Kevin Plank announced his plans to buy Harbor Boating, Inc., the company that operates Baltimore's water taxis. Plank's firm, Sagamore Ventures, planned to add new boats to the line, more stops, longer hours, and eventually an on-demand offering in conjunction with Uber. Now the first boat in Plank's new fleet is nearly ready for passengers.
The Key's Anthem is a black, 55-foot Hooper's Island Draketail, custom-built by Baltimore-based Maritime Applied Pysics Corp. It's modeled after a 1920s-era crabbing vessel that was popular for its unique design and speed capabilities. The boat has a top speed of about eight knots (seeing as how it will be operating in a six-knot zone) and will be able to carry 49 passengers, plus a captain and first mate. The Key's Anthem is expected to set sail on the harbor in a few weeks after it gets its additional coast guard certifications. For more info, click to baltimorewatertaxi.com.
