Did you know that Oyster season isn't limited to the fall and winter anymore? Oyster aquaculture from right here in the Old Line State is now providing safe and sustainable Chesapeake Bay oysters all year round. This weekend, stop by the State Fair Park and check out the "Oyster Alley" at the Maryland State Fair. You will learn all about the oyster aquaculture industry directly from the growers themselves, and taste the amazing oysters they grow! Event hours are 2-7 p.m. August 27-28. Come and learn how their oyster operations provide important jobs throughout the state, improve the health of the bay throughout the growing process, and make unique and flavorful oysters that vary depending on locations and growing techniques. Come and sample local, sustainable, and fresh Maryland oysters and you will see why oyster aquaculture is an important part of the future here in Maryland. Oysters will be available on the half shell, or grilled. The following growers will be in attendance: Hoopers Island Oyster Aquaculture Co., Fishing Creek, MD Madhouse Oyster Co. Fishing Creek, MD Honga Oyster Co., Wingate, MD Shore Thing Shellfish, Tall Timbers, MD Tickets for purchasing oysters will be sold at the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) MD tent, so don't forget to stop by to chat with CCA volunteers, and learn more about what CCA MD is doing to conserve, protect, and enhance Maryland's marine resources. The Oyster Recovery Partnership (ORP) will also be on hand to share the hard work they do, share why oyster shell recycling is such an important part of the oyster puzzle, and tell you all about the other great things they have on the horizon. The Maryland State Fair runs from August 25 to September 5 at the state fairgrounds in Timonium. Apart from oyster alley there will be rides, horse racing, Maryland livestock on display, live music, swimming pigs, home-brewed beer contests, all things deep fried, and much more.
