Visitors to Bethany Beach stopped and stared in surprise when they saw this mechanical giant playing in the surf on a recent Sunday evening. It’s nickname is The Crab, and it drew plenty of attention. It’s going to be exploring the shoreline from Fenwick up to Rehoboth as part of the beach replenishment project. Replensihment pros are using boats and this tall tripod to monitor shoreline depths. The Crab moves directly into the surf, then retraces its path returning to the beach. Next, it crawls (rolls, actually, on huge tires) down the shoreline a distance and repeats the process. At each stop, support personnel in a truck answered questions from curious beachcombers.
