From the Field: Winter dredge survey counts Chesapeake Bay crabs from Chesapeake Bay Program on Vimeo.
Crab feasts--more expensive this year, due to bad numbers? Photo by Gary Reich You might have heard that the annual Winter Crab Dredge Survey, conducted by Maryland and Virginia officials, was released a couple of weeks ago and that while the numbers show a sharp decline in the overall population of blue crabs in the Chesapeake Bay, the survey did show that the population of spawning-age females skyrocketed. But what the heck is a Winter Crab Dredge Survey? Click on the video above for a great on-the-boat look at the whole process, and then grab the June issue of PropTalk when it hits the docks next week to get details on the numbers and what the 2013 survey means to recreational and commercial crabbers. PropTalk hits the docks next Tuesday, May 14. Inside you'll find our annual Classic Boat issue, tips on fishing at night, and all of our popular departments such as Chesapeake Boatshop Reports, Dock Talk, and Fish Forecasts.
