Elvis likes oysters, apparently. Photo by Gary ReichYou’d be hard pressed today to find any major evidence that large-scale oyster packing operations ever existed in and around Bay places like Galesville, Shady Side, Baltimore, and Cambridge in Maryland. or Willis Wharf, Mathews, or Hayes in Virginia. While a pile of oyster shells or an old, sun-faded sign on the side of a cinder block building might provide clue to the Bay’s former oyster glory days, it isn’t until you take a peek into the slightly kitschy, eclectic world of vintage oyster tins when substantial evidence about these old bivalve-oriented shucking centers comes to light. Be sure to pick up the March issue of PropTalk when it hits the docks on February 15. Inside you'll find an interesting article on Chesapeake Bay oyster tins.
