On April 24, Reza Baluchi's latest attempt to "run" from Florida to Bermuda in an inflatable bubble was cut short by the U.S. Coast Guard. Baluchi was undertaking this feat in order to "raise money for children in need and to inspire those that have lost hope for a better future." And this is not the first time he has tried this.
Back in 2014, Baluchi had to be rescued after a similar failed attempt. The Coast Guard received reports of a disoriented man in a bubble off the coast of Miami but he initially refused their help. Three days later he did ask for help and the cost of the rescue totaled
$144,000, according to CNN.
Before embarking on this latest journey, the Coast Guard ordered Baluchi not to depart because his vessel and methods were unsafe. But Baluchi ignored the order and departed from Pompano Beach, FL, possibly last Friday. By Sunday he was picked up and his vessel towed back to land.
In the wake of the rescue the Coast Guard has posted several critical tweets in regards to Baluchi ignoring their safety orders and the burden his rescues have put on taxpayers. Click to
