A barge carrying a giant electromagnet that could change the study of particle physics is making an unscheduled stop in the Chesapeake Bay to avoid bad weather.
The barge was scheduled to pass the coast of Virginia today, but as it traveled past the Eastern Shore, the decision was made to seek shelter.
The magnet, 50 feet in diameter, is on a voyage from New York to Illinois, traveling down the Atlantic Coast, around Florida and up the Mississippi River. The journey is expected to take 4 to 6 weeks.
