With the start of summer less than a month away, please stay safe on the water on this season. Make sure you have plenty of life jackets on-board and always tell someone where you are going before you set sail for the day. From the Department of Natural Resources: "On May 29, Maryland Natural Resources Police recovered the body of a Port Deposit man who went missing on May 26 after strong winds capsized a canoe and tossed him and a fishing partner into the Susquehanna River. Jacob Nicholas Nolan, 22, was found near Marina Park in Port Deposit. Nolan was a passenger in a 16-foot canoe owned by Matthew Flowers Trainor, 22, also of Port Deposit. The two men were fishing after dark near Lee’s Landing in Port Deposit when the accident occurred. Trainor said he was able to reach a cooler, which had his cell phone secured to the outside in a plastic bag. He called his wife, who contacted the authorities. Trainor was rescued at 10:43 p.m. by the Water Witch Volunteer Fire Co. of Port Deposit." On May 30, the Natural Resources Police recovered the body of a Baltimore County boater near Salt Peter in the Gunpowder River. "John Wilmer Conrad III, 40, of Sparks, was on his way from Chestertown to a Middle River marina on May 25, when he went missing. His 25-foot sailboat was seen the next morning, motoring in a circle near North Point State Park, by a Baltimore County Police aviation unit. The Coast Guard was able to board the boat, anchor it and rescue a dog." On Sunday May 31, six people were rescued after a 17-foot Sea Ray capsized near the Bay Bridge. Three of the boaters were pulled from the water by a Tow Boat U.S. vessel, and the other three managed to climb to the base of the bridge. Only two of the passengers pulled from the water were wearing life jackets. Luckily there were no injuries. For more info, check out baltimoresun.com.
