On April 19, the Fort Smallwood State Park Boat Ramp opened, making it the first public boat ramp owned by Anne Arundel County. The only other two public boat ramps in the county are at Sandy Point State Park and Annapolis' Truxtun Park. According the MD DNR, there were 33,365 boats, including about 9500 trailered vessels in the county during 2015, and only two public boat ramps. Photo by Allison Nataro For more than 20 years, local residents have been trying to get a boat ramp in AACo but there was always the issue of where to build it. Efforts to build a ramp at Fort Smallwood lasted at least eight years. The recession slowed matters down a bit but eventually plans were put into motion. The county received $1.3 million in federal funds and $2 million in funding for a project that would ultimately cost $4.9 million. The cost to launch from the ramp is $10 which includes the $6 entrance fee to the park. The park also includes a new 46-trailer parking lot, as well as road and stormwater management improvements. The hope is that this ramp will be the first step in improving water access in the county. [gallery type="square" link="file" ids="13751,13752"]
