A race boat crashed into the fleet of on-the-water spectators at the annual Thunder on the Narrows on Kent Island around 5 p.m. on Sunday evening. Maryland NRP spokesperson Candus Thomson said that eight people were injured and three were taken to Anne Arundel Medical center following the accident. The extent of their injuries is not currently known.
The accident happened during the Grand National Hydroplane race, where boats can go up to 145 mph. Boats are 20 feet long and have a 468-cubic inch engines. The race boat came into turn three and did not bank left, instead veered and crashed into a two-tiered spectator boat anchored in Hog Bay. The race boat was estimated to be going around 80 mph, which leads many to believe the driver was braking and that the rudder was potentially broken. The crash was hidden by the rooster tail so much that the announcer did not even see the crash.
Unconfirmed reports state that a young child was critically injured.
More information will be provided as it becomes available.
