On the afternoon of Sunday, January 14 Marine Emergency Team 21 (an operational division of the community Volunteer Fire Company of Bowleys Quarters and Vicinity) was alerted for a boat fire in the Wilson Point community of Middle River. The time of dispatch was 1:31 p.m. in the 1800 block of Wilson Point Road in Middle River, MD. The vessel was a 1989 34 foot Wellcraft Gran Sport.
First arriving units reported a boat docked with fire showing and stretched a hose line to begin extinguish of the fire. On arrival, Foam Engine 211's crew (Marine Team Members) stretched a foam line to back up the initial attack company. Marine Team Members assisted other companies at location with overhauling the 34-foot vessel to find all the hidden remaining fire.
Rescue Boat 216 could not access the incident from the water due to heavy ice conditions. The fire did extend to the vertical pilings at the private pier the boat was docked at. Thankfully no injury or loss of live was reported.
Responding units from Marine Emergency Team 21 included Foam Engine 211, Heavy Rescue Squad 213, Utility 215, Marine Support/Special Unit 214, Rescue Boat 216. Other companies on location included Middle River Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Fallston Volunteer Fire Company (responded from the BCOFD Middle River station), BCOFD Engine 55 Perry Hall (Golden Ring), and Baltimore City Truck 26. (Several jurisdictions were filling in local Baltimore County fire stations at the time of dispatch due to local resources currently at the third alarm fire in Dundalk, MD.)
While the vessel is expected to be a total loss, significant environmental impact was reduced by the quick extinguishment by all units. The cause of the fire currently remains under investigation by Baltimore County Police.
