Both Program Open Space projects will be managed as part of existing Maryland Park Service lands. With approval, the department will now acquire 180 acres of forested property adjacent to Elk Neck State Park in Cecil County to expand trail and water access along the Elk River. The purchase is being leveraged with a 50 percent contribution from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund. The department will also open new boating sites and enhance existing fishing opportunities along the Wye River in Queen Anne’s County, which will become part of the Wye Island Natural Resource Management Area. The partnership with the Conservation Fund will allow the department to acquire a new 20-acre tract, which includes two existing piers that can be used for motorized and non-motorized watercraft. An existing building on the property will also now become part of a larger conference and rental complex. “These important projects reflect Maryland’s long-term commitment to conserving our natural resources while providing outdoor recreation opportunities for our residents and visitors,” said Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton. “Through these two targeted acquisitions, we will enhance the user experience at our state parks.”
