At around 3 a.m. Sunday, April 1, a three-alarm fire broke at Owens Landing Marina and Condominium Complex on the Susquehanna River in Perryville, MD. Nearly 100 firefighters from Cecil and Harford Counties battled the blaze for hours, including Charlestown Boat 5 (Cecil County) and Susquehanna Hose Company's Boat 553 (Havre de Grace, Harford County).
According to the Cecil Whig, buildings 13 through 18, containing 18 total units were consumed by the blaze. The building in question burned to the ground, with an estimated $2 million in damage. An elederly woman was recsued from her third floor condo and transported to Bayview Medical Center by Maryland State Police Aviation Command. A total of three other people were transported for minor and non-life threatening injuries. The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshall released several statements on Facebook on Sunday:
All occupants who were transported to hospitals are listed in stable condition. The building is a complete loss with extensive heat damage to both buildings on either side and tenants have been allowed access to their homes. The building met all required fire codes including: smoke alarms in each unit as well as a fire alarm and fire sprinklers throughout. All of these devices operated accordingly and allowed the occupants to safely escape and/or allowing firefighters to safely enter the building to save lives. We hope to continue to provide updates as they develop.
The Origin/Cause is still under investigation. The Office of the State Fire Marshal takes pride in determining, if possible, the cause of every fire. At times they can be tedious and time consuming. We appreciate everyone who has stopped and inquired about the occupants well-being, provided assistance along with the well wishes of support to the firefighters and our personnel."
