This is news to us, but several towns across the country and in Canada celebrate the arrival of Autumn with giant pumpkin regatta. You heard us, giant pumpkin regattas. And we mean giant. Some of these pumpkins weigh upwards of 1000 pounds!
One such event is held in October annual in Tualatin, Oregon. This event draws thousands of spectators each year as costumed participants paddle mammoth pumpkins around a lake in a series of wacky races. Pumpkins are provided by the Pacific Giant Vegetable Growers club with members of the club racing in the first heat. The second heat is reserved for sponsors and special guests, while the third heat is reserved for the Tualatin Police Department vs. Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue. Paddlers in the fourth heat are selected from a lottery, so if you're in the Pacific Northwest, be sure to enter for next year's regatta! This year's event took place on October 21.
Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada, otherwise known as Big Pumpkin Country, also holds an annual pumpkin regatta, the Windsor West Hants Pumpkin Weigh-Off and Regatta. This year's event took place on October 15. During their Pumpkin Weigh-Off, the winning pumpkin weighed 1624 pounds! Big pumpkin country indeed.
South Jordan, Utah, held its Ginormous Pumpkin Regatta October 21, and there are more events around the world we haven't even mentioned.
Wondering how people manage to carve out and row these hefty gourds? The below video gives a good example.

Happy Halloween, readers! This tradition is so wacky and wonderful we just had to share. Maybe Annapolis should start its own giant pumpkin regatta... Any takers?
