JoAnna Goldberg, the CEO of Fairwinds Marina in Annapolis and president/CEO of Freedom Boat Club of Maryland & DC, was chosen as one of “40 Under 40” top young leaders in the US by the editors of Boating Industry magazine. JoAnna Goldberg, CEO of Fairwinds Marina and Freedom Boat Club of Maryland & DC, named to prestigious Boating Industry ”40 Under 40” list of top young boating industry professionals. Selected from a national slate of nearly 200 nominations, Goldberg, 30, joins an elite group of powerful young boating industry executives from all walks of business for this prestigious distinction. According to the article appearing in the July issue of Boating Industry magazine, individuals were chosen for their professional achievements to date, coupled with what the editors believe is their “potential to carry the industry forward.” In the four years since she took the helm at Fairwinds Marina, Goldberg has made major waves. As President & CEO of Fairwinds Marina, Goldberg is credited with transforming a neglected marina into one of the best small boat marinas on the Chesapeake Bay and the pride of Cape St Claire. She brought the store into the 21st century by converting the inventory and all record keeping from paper to electronic, while on the docks, upgraded and added finger piers and boat lifts, fuel and pump-out stations, plus a closed-loop recycled water power wash station. She also renovated customer facilities, added wi-fi and a family picnic area, plus installed a 29-camera security system so customers could easily view their boats from afar at their leisure. Another major achievement included increasing marina occupancy from 60% to 85%, with 10% dedicated for transient use. Other notable initiatives included organizing the adjacent boat yard to create 50 all-new land slips, plus expanding marina services and doubling the number of technicians to better support the demands of the marina customers. Goldberg is a 2009 graduate of Columbia University. A lifelong boater, she loves being part of a boating family and is actively engaged in the boating industry and local boating community. She serves on the Freedom Boat Club National Marketing Advisory Council and the franchisor’s National 20 Group. She also represents Fairwinds Marina as a member of the Maryland Marine Trade Association, and the National Marine Manufacturers Association. “I’m very honored and pleased to have been selected for this recognition among many outstanding peers, and it motivates me to continue working hard to improve boating in the market I’m so fortunate to serve,” said Goldberg. “I’ll never forget my first day driving down Route 50 into the sunrise as I headed to the marina, thinking just how fortunate I was to be launching a career where I can make a positive difference and facilitate making dreams come true for people who love boating.” In the magazine article, Goldberg credits her father and local entrepreneur Larry Goldberg as her mentor. “He is the one who motivated and inspired me to be the leader I am today,” she said. “My dad is the most tenacious person I know, and one of the most caring. Through his example and coaching, I learned that excellence is the only acceptable standard, and more importantly, to never ask anyone to do something I wouldn’t do myself.”
