Chesapeake Boats of Crisfield, MD, suffered a massive fire on June 27 and was reduced to ashes. The fire started in the office area of the 10,000-square foot building around 2 p.m. yesterday, and it took fire fighters from 15 different companies almost two and a half hours to contain the blaze. No one was injured. Chesapeake Boats owner Dave Mason was in downtown Crisfield on business at the time of the fire, but employees were able to move a large drum of acetone from the building before it caught fire and exploded. From DelMarVa Now: Mason's nephews, Austin and Chris Mason, were working at the complex when the fire broke out. ""It started in the office, one of our other coworkers said 'Fire' and we were inside a boat fiberglassing, and by the time we got out it had already taken off," Austin Mason told WMDT. Once the fire reached the boats that the Mason brothers had been fiberglassing, the blaze became uncontrollable. "There was a 200 gallon resin tank up front and when that finally went up, we were standing here by the road and you had to turn your back or walk the other way it was that hot," says Austin Mason. Damages are reported at $10 million. Dave Mason has been a boatbuilder for the last 20 years, opening Chesapeake Boats in 2000. Two of the boats that were inside the building were completely destroyed; a 46-foot boat headed to Seattle and a 36-footer bound for Florida. Chesapeake Boats is routinely featured in PropTalk's Boat Shop Reports.
