The Maryland Department of the Environment is currently investigating a fish kill in eastern Baltimore County, including the Gunpowder and Bird Rivers, in which an estimated 6000 fish have died. According to the MD DNR, at least nine species of fish have been affected, including yellow perch, largemouth bass, bluegill sunfish, pumpkinseed sunfish, carp, black crappie, gizzard shad, spottail shiner, and channel catfish. The area affected includes the Gunpowder and Bird Rivers. Courtesy Google Maps DNR reports that the preliminary investigation shows toxins produced by algae to be the likely cause of the fish kill. There have been no signs of pollution as the potential cause.
