Early Wednesday evening, a boat belonging to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation reportedly struck a submerged object off of Bloodsworth Island in the lower Chesapeake Bay and sank. There were 23 people on board, including students, parents, staff, and teachers.
The MD Natural Resources Police received a call that a boat was in distress and emergency crews began to assemble. But the first boat on scene was a commercial work boat that picked up all 23 people and brought them to shore in Wingate, where they were transferred to EMS personnel.
According to the Coast Guard, everyone on board was thankfully wearing a lifejacket. The passengers were taken to nearby hospitals to be checked for possible injuries and all involved have been discharged. CBF will be conducting a review of the incident, in conjunction with the Coast Guard investigation.
