Fueling the boat is something we all do. But we want to do it as carefully as possible for safety reasons and for environmental reasons. BoatUS provides safe fueling tips in a comprehensive check-list outlining what to do before, during, and after fueling. Here are a few highlights:
  • Turn off the engine and extinguish all flames
  • Fill portable tanks on the dock, not the boat
  • Know how much fuel your tank holds and how much you need
  • Hold the nozzle the entire duration of refueling
  • Catch spills
  • Fuel slowly and listen for a change in tone as tank fills
  • Do not "top off"
  • Maintain contact between the nozzle and the deck to prevent sparking
  • Run the blower before restarting the engine
  • Keep a copy aboard of the BoatUS Basics of Fueling Brochure
