image via Maryland DNR That's right. Stop trying to find the best feng shui place in your yard for a coop. Chickens are so 2011. What's hot this year? Oysters. The Maryland DNR is looking for Marylanders to help grow baby oysters for the 2013 growing season. No, they're not cute, but they don't wake you up at 5 a.m. with their yammering, either. Last year over 2 million oysters were raised by citizen farmers throughout Maryland waters, and the DNR is now looking for local coordinators willing to organize the program in additional rivers, creeks, and Bay areas for 2013. From the DNR's website: “Marylanders Grow Oysters works to engage enthusiastic community partners in raising and protecting young oysters during their vulnerable first year of life,” said Program Coordinator Chris Judy. “Once this process is complete, the oysters are then planted in local sanctuaries to enhance the Chesapeake Bay’s ecosystem.” Citizen oyster growers enjoy the personal rewards of stewardship and learn about oysters while contributing to the enhancement of an oyster reef. The year-old oysters are collected and planted in a local oyster sanctuary, and a new group of young oysters is distributed to participating growers to start the process again. To take part in the program, you can visit this website and print out an application. Also, contact Chris Judy at [email protected]. But get your application in quickly! They're due May 15th.
