On June 27, Kevin Charles Yates, Sr., 41, went missing after falling overboard from a 40-foot cabin cruiser as it crossed from Eastern Bay and Herrington Harbor. According to police, Yates was last seen aboard the cabin cruiser near Poplar Island and he was not wearing a lifejacket. Weather conditions at the time were reported at 25 knot winds (approximately), with four- to five-foot seas.

Rescue crews completed numerous searches by air and water covering more than 870 square miles but to no avail. On Friday June 29, Coast Guard officials made the difficult decision to suspend searches. This afternoon, the Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) reports that Yates' body was recovered near Poplar Island. He is Maryland's 11th boating fatality this year.
